Overview
The BSc (Hons) Data Science at the University of York explores how data can be collected, processed, analysed and used to understand complex questions. The course combines mathematical, statistical and computational approaches, developing the ability to work with data systematically and draw meaningful conclusions from evidence.
What You'll Learn
Core principles of data science, mathematics, statistics and computing.
Programming techniques for processing, analyzing and working with data.
Probability and statistical methods for understanding uncertainty and variation.
Data structures, algorithms and computational approaches to problem-solving.
Data management, including methods for organizing, preparing and handling datasets.
Machine learning and approaches to identifying patterns and making predictions from data.
Data visualization and techniques for presenting analytical results clearly.
Research methods, critical evaluation, independent investigation and communication of data-driven findings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, statistical and computational methods to investigate data-driven problems. They will understand how data can be prepared, managed and analysed and how statistical and computational techniques can be used to identify patterns and support conclusions. Students will develop the ability to select appropriate analytical approaches, evaluate the quality and limitations of evidence and interpret results responsibly. They will also be able to use programming and data analysis techniques to work with datasets and communicate findings through clear written, numerical and visual forms. The course develops systematic problem-solving, critical reasoning and independent research skills for investigating complex questions through data.
