Overview

This programme at the University of Leeds explores the diverse cultures and societies of the ancient world, spanning ancient Greece, Rome, Persia, and beyond. Students examine the political, cultural, and social histories of these civilisations, alongside how later cultures have received and interpreted them, and how this understanding continues to develop today.

What You'll Learn

  • The development of Greek and Roman civilisation, politics, and literature

  • The lives of ordinary people and subordinate groups in the ancient world, alongside prominent historical figures

  • Historical research methods and how to critically assess available evidence

  • Archaeology and the material culture of the ancient world

  • Literary analysis and daily life in ancient Greek and Roman society

  • Introductory study of the Greek, Roman, and Arab-Islamic worlds

  • Optional specialist topics such as classical literature, early Islamic history, or Ancient Greek and Latin

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyse a range of historical, literary, and archaeological evidence from the ancient world. They will understand the political, social, and cultural development of ancient civilisations, and be able to assess how these societies have been interpreted and represented across different eras. Students will also be equipped with research and analytical skills applicable to the study of history more broadly, including working directly with primary sources such as manuscripts and artefacts.
