Course Description

Overview

Understanding the political, socio-cultural, historical, and economic dynamics of East Asia is essential to navigating global security, international commerce, and cultural exchange. The BA (Hons) East Asian Studies at University of Leeds provides an interdisciplinary exploration of China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Delivered by the Department of East Asian Studies within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, the curriculum combines rigorous cultural and historical inquiry with optional intensive language training in Chinese, Japanese, or Thai from beginner or advanced entry points. Students investigate critical themes including international relations, cinema, religious traditions, economic development, and civil society across East Asia. The degree offers flexibility through dedicated study abroad pathways or industrial work placements. This program is ideal for curious, culturally agile problem-solvers seeking to master East Asian regional dynamics, build linguistic capabilities, and analyze the geopolitical influence of the Asia-Pacific region.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of the socio-political structures, historical trajectories, and cultural traditions defining contemporary East Asia. They will demonstrate the capability to critically evaluate primary and secondary sources, synthesize complex regional data, and analyze geopolitical shifts in the Asia-Pacific area. Students build strong cross-cultural competencies and practical communication abilities, alongside optional spoken and written proficiency in an East Asian language, supported by modern Language Zone facilities. Furthermore, learners master the ability to communicate nuanced cultural and political arguments clearly across written reports, policy briefs, and oral presentations. Through specialized module pathways, study abroad opportunities, and a major final-year research dissertation, scholars cultivate the analytical precision and global perspective required to excel in international diplomacy, journalism, global business, consultancy, civil service, translation, or postgraduate research.
