Course Description

Overview

BA History examines the people, societies, events and ideas that have shaped the past and continue to influence the present. The course develops a critical understanding of historical change while teaching students how to interpret evidence, question established narratives and build independent arguments.

What You'll Learn

  • Major themes, events and developments across different historical periods.

  • Political, social, cultural and intellectual aspects of the past.

  • Historical sources and methods used to investigate the past.

  • Approaches to assessing evidence and interpreting competing accounts.

  • The relationship between historical events and their wider contexts.

  • Research, critical analysis and academic writing skills.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to examine historical questions using relevant evidence and appropriate analytical approaches. They will be able to assess the reliability and significance of different sources, recognise contrasting interpretations and construct coherent arguments about historical change. Students will also develop the ability to place events and ideas within their broader social, political and cultural contexts. Through independent research and critical engagement with historical scholarship, they will learn to communicate well-supported conclusions clearly and demonstrate an informed understanding of how interpretations of the past are developed.
