Course Description

Overview

Investigating the production, interpretation, and cultural impact of visual art and architecture across global historical contexts provides vital insights into human creativity, power dynamics, and social identity. The BA (Hons) History of Art at University of Leeds is delivered by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies. Taught by research-led art historians and curators, the curriculum spans major art historical movements from classical antiquity, the Renaissance, and 19th-century avant-gardes to contemporary global art practices and digital media. Students examine artworks within their original historical, political, and philosophical frameworks, utilizing critical methodologies such as postcolonial theory, feminist critiques, and social histories of art. Learning is enriched through close engagement with local, national, and international collections, including the University of Leeds Art Collection and regional museum archives. This program is ideally suited for analytical, visually perceptive thinkers seeking to master formal art analysis, interrogate visual culture, and prepare for careers across the arts and heritage sectors.

They will demonstrate the capability to perform formal visual analysis, critique primary archival sources, and evaluate complex visual objects within their historical and socio-political contexts. Students build strong technical abilities in qualitative historical research, curatorial drafting, object-based analysis, and critical essay writing through gallery seminars and research workshops. Furthermore, learners master the ability to communicate sophisticated aesthetic arguments and cultural insights effectively across written reports, gallery labels, and oral presentations.
