Course Description

Overview

Uncovering how ancient civilisations lived, thought and organised themselves takes both archaeological fieldwork and careful historical interpretation, combining hands-on discovery with critical analysis. The BA (Hons) Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Birmingham covers prehistoric Britain and the Mediterranean alongside the civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome, taught by researchers investigating everything from insect archaeology to ancient urban culture. Students gain practical training through a three-week Archaeology Field School and a Study Tour to sites such as Athens, Delphi and Mycenae, with access to the department's own museum and the Cadbury Research Library. The course suits students who want a genuinely hands-on route into the ancient world, building skills valued across heritage, museum, education and media careers.

What You'll Learn

  • The Greek and Roman worlds, alongside the practice and theory of archaeology

  • Mythology, identity and alternative perspectives on ancient societies

  • Material culture and heritage, and how ancient societies are studied and understood today

  • Practical fieldwork skills through the Archaeology Field School, covering excavation and site recording

  • An overseas Study Tour to archaeological sites across Greece

  • Specialist topics such as Roman women, Spartan society or ancient Egyptian art and architecture

  • The option to study Latin, Greek or Egyptian language

  • An independent dissertation on a topic of your own choosing

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyse ancient societies using both archaeological and historical evidence, drawing on material culture, texts and fieldwork data. They will be equipped to apply practical archaeological skills, including excavation, survey and site recording, gained through hands-on fieldwork experience. Through an independent dissertation and specialist option modules, students will develop the ability to conduct original research and construct well-evidenced arguments about the ancient world. Graduates will leave with strong analytical, practical and research skills, well suited to careers in archaeology, heritage, museums, education, media and beyond.
