Overview

The ancient Mediterranean continues to shape how we think about language, literature and society, and studying its texts sharpens skills in analysis, interpretation and clear thinking that carry well beyond the classroom. The BA Classics at the University of Bristol builds a thorough grounding in Greek and Latin alongside exploration of themes such as gender, law, health and identity in the ancient world, connecting historical texts to questions still relevant today. Teaching spans complete beginners through to advanced linguists, and study is enriched by field trips to nearby ancient sites and further afield to places such as Rome and Pompeii. The course suits students with a genuine interest in language and antiquity who want to develop rigorous analytical and research skills through direct engagement with literary and material sources.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to read, translate and interpret Greek and Latin texts with confidence, and analyse a wide range of literary and material sources from the ancient Mediterranean. They will be equipped to engage critically with enduring questions of gender, law, health and cultural identity, drawing connections between antiquity and contemporary concerns. Through independent research and a self-directed dissertation, students will develop the ability to formulate original arguments, work with primary sources and communicate findings clearly. Graduates will leave with strong analytical, linguistic and research skills, along with the creativity and initiative to plan and deliver their own projects, preparing them for further study or a wide range of career paths.
