Course Description

Overview

Language forms the bedrock of human interaction, serving as both a cognitive system and a dynamic tool for social expression. Students aiming to explore the mechanics and cultural impact of communication can enroll in the BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics at the University of Sheffield. Bridging the humanities and empirical sciences, the programme examines how speech sounds, word structures, and meanings are mentally processed and socially deployed. Teaching combines specialist lectures with small-group interactive seminars where learners practice phonetic transcription and analyze linguistic datasets. Guided by active researchers, students engage with innovative assessment methods designed to test both theoretical understanding and real-world analytical skills. This degree suits inquisitive individuals who possess a fascination for the structure, history, and social power of human speech. Graduates emerge with advanced analytical abilities, empirical research techniques, and a deep understanding of linguistic diversity.

What You'll Learn

Phonetics and Phonology exploring the physical production, acoustic properties, and systematic organization of speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet

Sociolinguistics examining how social class, gender, ethnicity, and contextual factors influence speech patterns and linguistic perceptions

Historical Linguistics analyzing the evolutionary processes that drive language change across syntax, semantics, and morphology over time

Language and Cognition investigating the mental frameworks and cognitive processes involved in language processing and discourse production

First Language Acquisition evaluating theoretical perspectives and developmental stages in child grammar acquisition

Syntax and Meaning studying the structural rules and semantic interfaces that govern sentence formation and interpretation

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the programme, students will develop a broad and nuanced knowledge of language across multiple scales, from micro-level phonetic acoustic properties and syntactic structures to macro-level sociolinguistic variation and historical language evolution. Learners will cultivate the capacity to critically evaluate competing theoretical frameworks, such as nativist and emergentist theories of language acquisition, while applying linguistic principles to real-world issues surrounding media representation, identity, and social justice. Through practical exercises in data handling, empirical fieldwork, and speech transcription utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet, students acquire hands-on expertise in analyzing complex spoken and written datasets. Furthermore, the degree structure allows learners to specialize in specific areas of interest, such as historical linguistics, cognitive studies, or sociolinguistics, equipping them with the independent research capabilities, empirical precision, and communication skills needed to excel in diverse professional sectors.
