Course Description

Overview

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing combines the critical study of literary works with the practice of producing original writing. Students explore how writers use language, form, structure, and voice while developing their own creative approaches and learning to evaluate literature and writing from different perspectives.

What You'll Learn

  • English literature across different periods, genres, and cultural contexts

  • Poetry, fiction, drama, and other literary forms

  • Creative writing techniques, processes, and approaches

  • Narrative, character, dialogue, imagery, structure, and voice

  • Close reading and critical interpretation of literary texts

  • Drafting, editing, revising, and developing creative work

  • Relationships between literature, culture, history, and society

  • Different critical approaches to literary and creative writing

  • Research, reflection, and discussion of creative practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate informed knowledge of literary works, genres, and traditions and analyse how writers create meaning through language and form. They will be able to produce original creative work using appropriate techniques and make considered decisions about structure, style, voice, and narrative. Students will develop the ability to read literary texts closely, evaluate different interpretations, and construct clear, evidence-based critical arguments. They will also learn to review and refine their own writing, respond thoughtfully to feedback, and reflect on their creative choices and development. The course will strengthen research, analytical, and communication skills while enabling students to connect creative practice with critical understanding of literature and its wider cultural and historical contexts.
