Course Description

Overview

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing combines the critical study of literary texts with the development of original creative work. Students examine how writers use language, form, structure, and voice while developing their own approaches to poetry, fiction, and other forms of creative expression.

What You'll Learn

  • English literature across different periods, genres, and cultural settings

  • Poetry, fiction, drama, and other literary forms

  • Creative writing techniques, processes, and approaches

  • Language, voice, character, narrative, imagery, and structure

  • Close reading and critical interpretation of literary texts

  • Drafting, editing, revising, and refining creative work

  • Literary and creative writing in historical, cultural, and social contexts

  • Critical and theoretical approaches to literature and writing

  • Research, reflection, and evaluation of creative practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse literary works critically and explain how language, form, structure, and context influence their meaning. They will be able to produce original creative writing using appropriate techniques and make informed choices about style, voice, character, and narrative. Students will develop the ability to compare texts and interpretations, evaluate critical perspectives, and construct coherent arguments supported by relevant evidence. They will also learn to revise and improve their creative work, respond constructively to feedback, and reflect critically on their writing processes. The course will strengthen research, analytical, creative, and communication skills, enabling students to connect the practice of writing with a broader understanding of literature and its cultural and historical significance.
