Course Description

Overview:

English Literature and Creative Writing BA at Lancaster University combines the critical study of literature with the practice of imaginative writing. The foundation stage develops the academic knowledge, English language ability, research skills and communication techniques needed to progress confidently into undergraduate study in this subject area.

What You'll Learn:

  • Academic English for undergraduate-level reading, writing and discussion.

  • Research methods and the skills needed to plan and complete an academic research project.

  • Communication techniques for presenting ideas clearly in academic and professional contexts.

  • Study strategies that support independent learning and effective engagement with university-level materials.

  • Core approaches to analysing literature across different periods, genres and forms as preparation for the degree.

  • Creative writing practice, including developing ideas, experimenting with written forms and responding constructively to feedback.

  • The relationship between critical reading and creative practice, helping students consider how literary study can inform their own writing.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the foundation stage, students will be better prepared to undertake undergraduate study in English Literature and Creative Writing. They will be able to communicate ideas with greater clarity, use academic English appropriately, conduct structured research and produce organised written work. Students will also have developed greater confidence in reading and analysing literary material while beginning to apply creative techniques to their own writing. The pathway supports progression by strengthening the academic, research and communication foundations required for the BA, while encouraging students to approach literature and writing as complementary forms of critical and creative enquiry.
