Course Description

Overview:

The English Literature and History BA foundation pathway prepares students for undergraduate study by strengthening academic knowledge, English language ability, research practice, and university study skills. At Lancaster University, the pathway supports progression into a humanities degree by combining academic preparation with communication and professional skills that are relevant to further study.

What You'll Learn:

  • English for Academic Purposes, with emphasis on the language and academic conventions needed for undergraduate study.

  • Research methods and academic practice through an English for Academic Purposes module that includes a research project.

  • Professional and communication skills for presenting ideas clearly and working effectively in an academic environment.

  • Independent study techniques that support successful engagement with university-level learning.

  • Academic knowledge related to the student's intended subject and broader humanities and social science study.

  • Elective study options, which can include mathematics, further mathematics, business, or economics, depending on the selected pathway structure.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the foundation pathway, students will have developed a stronger academic and linguistic foundation for progressing to undergraduate study in English Literature and History. They will be able to communicate ideas more effectively in academic contexts, apply appropriate research and study techniques, and undertake structured academic work with greater independence. Students will also have experience completing research-based work and developing professional communication skills. The pathway is designed to help learners understand the expectations of university study and build the academic capabilities needed to engage confidently with their subsequent degree programme.
