Overview
Geography examines how landscapes, people, places and environments connect, and it offers essential insight into a planet that is changing rapidly. Studying BA (Hons) Geography at Loughborough University places students at the point where the social and natural sciences meet, through the linked strands of human and physical geography. The first year establishes a broad foundation in both strands, after which students can specialise increasingly in human geography or keep a balance between the two. Teaching is informed by the research of academic staff who contribute to national and international policy, and module choices let students benefit directly from that expertise. The degree is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), and fieldwork, including a residential field course in the first year, is central to learning. Options for a placement year, study abroad and language modules add further flexibility. The course suits those who want to understand pressing social and environmental issues, and graduates gain analytical, practical and professional skills that apply across many careers.

Earth system science and environmental hazards
Cartography, digital mapping and GIS
Remote sensing and spatial data analysis
Quantitative methods and research design in geography
Global environmental change and climate change
Earth surface processes, landforms and landscape evolution
Urban, rural and global migration geographies
Fieldwork in human and physical geography
An independent geography dissertation
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will understand how social and physical processes shape the world, from local environmental change to global economic, political and cultural patterns. They will be able to analyse how human societies and natural systems interact, and to evaluate critically the causes and impacts of issues such as climate change, environmental hazards, migration and urban development. Practical training builds competence in collecting, analysing and presenting both quantitative and qualitative data, and in using GIS, digital mapping and remote sensing to address geographical questions. Fieldwork and laboratory sessions develop hands-on skills, while group work, report writing and presentations strengthen communication and collaboration. The independent dissertation demonstrates the ability to design and carry out original research on a topic of personal interest. Flexible optional modules allow students to focus on human geography or maintain a balance with physical geography, and placement, study abroad or language options help them prepare for careers in sectors such as planning, policy, environment, finance and education.
