Course Description

Overview

This degree at the University of Southampton examines how human activity and the natural environment continually influence one another. Students explore the interplay between social, economic, political and cultural forces alongside physical earth processes, building a rounded understanding of contemporary global challenges. The programme combines classroom learning with fieldwork, giving students first-hand experience of the landscapes and communities they study.

What You'll Learn

  • Foundational concepts across both human and physical geography, including the historical development of the discipline

  • Statistical and computing techniques, including Geographical Information Systems (GIS), used to analyse spatial data

  • Global issues such as climate change and weather hazards, migration and development, economic geography, and urban politics

  • Social themes including health, welfare, social justice, and inequality

  • Research skills developed through an independent project, supervised from the second year through to completion in the final year

  • Optional pathways into related fields such as demography, sociology, economics, or geology, alongside opportunities to study modules from other disciplines

Learning Outcomes

By completion, students will be able to critically evaluate the relationships between people, places, and environments, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative methods. They will be equipped to design and carry out independent geographical research, including fieldwork-based investigation, and to apply GIS and other analytical tools to real-world spatial problems. Graduates will also have developed transferable skills in critical thinking, communication, and teamwork, along with the capacity to engage confidently with debates on sustainability, urbanisation, and social change.
