Course Description

Overview:

The History BA foundation course prepares students for undergraduate study by combining subject preparation with the academic skills needed for success in higher education. It introduces students to approaches used in humanities and social sciences while developing the ability to research, evaluate evidence and communicate ideas clearly.

What You'll Learn:

  • Academic English for reading, writing, discussion and research.

  • Methods for finding, selecting and using relevant academic information.

  • Critical approaches to interpreting evidence and assessing different viewpoints.

  • Key study techniques for managing university-level academic work.

  • Communication skills for presenting ideas in a clear and structured way.

  • Humanities and social science concepts that support progression into History.

  • Research practices that encourage independent learning and thoughtful analysis.

  • Academic conventions and approaches relevant to further study in the subject.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the foundation stage, students will be better prepared to engage with History at undergraduate level. They will be able to investigate questions using appropriate sources, distinguish between different interpretations and construct supported arguments from evidence. Students will also be able to communicate their findings effectively in written and academic contexts, demonstrating greater control of research and study techniques. The course develops a foundation in analytical thinking alongside the language and communication abilities required for further academic work. It also encourages students to become more independent learners who can approach unfamiliar material systematically, assess information carefully and reach reasoned conclusions. These skills provide a strong academic basis for continuing into the History BA degree and engaging with historical questions in greater depth.
