Course Description

Overview:

The Philosophy BA introduces students to the study of ideas that shape how we understand the world, ourselves, and our responsibilities to others. The course encourages students to question assumptions, examine different viewpoints, and use structured reasoning to explore difficult philosophical problems.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental areas and concepts within philosophical study.

  • Questions surrounding knowledge, existence, morality, reason, and human understanding.

  • Methods for examining philosophical arguments and comparing contrasting positions.

  • Critical reading and interpretation of philosophical writing.

  • Ways to identify assumptions, evaluate evidence, and assess the strength of reasoning.

  • Principles for developing clear, coherent, and independently reasoned arguments.

  • Academic approaches to researching, discussing, and presenting complex ideas.

  • Skills for engaging constructively with perspectives that differ from your own.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course, students will be able to analyse philosophical questions systematically and explain different responses to them. They will be able to break down arguments, identify their underlying assumptions, and judge how effectively particular conclusions are supported. Students will also be equipped to formulate and defend their own views while considering alternative interpretations and objections. They will demonstrate greater confidence in reading challenging philosophical material and extracting its central ideas and arguments. In addition, students will be able to organise their thinking clearly and communicate philosophical reasoning in a structured and precise manner. The course provides a foundation for approaching complex intellectual questions with curiosity, analytical discipline, and an appreciation of differing ways of understanding fundamental issues.
