Course Description

Overview:

The Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA Foundation pathway introduces students to three complementary disciplines that shape how societies think, govern, allocate resources and respond to complex challenges. At Lancaster University, the course develops an interdisciplinary perspective, encouraging students to connect philosophical reasoning with political analysis and economic ideas.

What You'll Learn:

  • Core concepts and approaches in philosophy, including structured reasoning, ethical questions and the evaluation of arguments.

  • Key ideas in politics, with attention to institutions, political systems, governance and the forces that influence public decision-making.

  • Fundamental principles of economics, including how resources are allocated and how economic choices affect individuals and societies.

  • The relationships between philosophical, political and economic perspectives when examining social and public issues.

  • Methods for analysing evidence, comparing different viewpoints and developing well-supported conclusions.

  • Academic skills relevant to studying subjects across the humanities and social sciences.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain important concepts across philosophy, politics and economics and recognise how the three fields can inform one another. They will be able to assess arguments critically, distinguish between competing interpretations and use evidence to support their own analysis. Students will also develop the ability to approach complex social and economic questions from more than one disciplinary perspective, communicate ideas clearly and construct reasoned conclusions.
