Course Description

Overview:

The BA (Hons) Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Loughborough University brings together three complementary disciplines to examine difficult political, economic and social questions. The course develops an interdisciplinary approach, helping students connect ideas, evidence and methods from different fields to assess problems and consider possible responses.

What You'll Learn:

  • Foundations of political science, political theory and international relations

  • Core concepts and analytical approaches in philosophy

  • Principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics

  • Policy analysis, economic evaluation and data-informed reasoning

  • Conceptual and textual analysis alongside social science research methods

  • Political philosophy and political economy at the intersection of the three disciplines

  • Critical discussion, structured debate and persuasive academic argument

  • Application of disciplinary perspectives to contemporary and complex issues

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyse challenging issues through political, philosophical and economic perspectives and recognise how these approaches complement one another. They will be able to evaluate competing explanations and proposed solutions using appropriate evidence, concepts and analytical methods. Students will also develop the ability to construct clear, logically supported arguments, communicate ideas effectively in discussion and written work, and apply research methods to investigate questions independently. The programme will prepare students to compare different viewpoints, identify assumptions and implications within arguments, and make reasoned judgements about complex problems.
