Course Description

Overview

The BEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering at Loughborough University brings together architectural design and engineering principles to address the technical demands of building design and construction. The course develops understanding across structures, building systems, materials and professional practice, helping students approach the built environment through both creative and analytical perspectives.

What You'll Learn

  • Structural behaviour, stress analysis and mathematical modelling

  • Fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics

  • Construction materials, fabrication and performance

  • Architectural engineering design and construction technology

  • Structural design using steel, timber, concrete and masonry

  • Soil mechanics, geology and geotechnical engineering

  • Building energy networks, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical systems

  • Integrated architectural and engineering design

  • Professional practice, project management, regulations and quality processes

  • Research methods, technical communication and digital engineering tools

  • Health, safety, sustainability and the responsibilities of professional engineers

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to identify and solve engineering problems using appropriate mathematical, computational and analytical approaches. They will understand how engineering principles, materials, construction methods and regulatory requirements inform the design of building components and systems. Students will also be able to integrate technical information within project work, use relevant software and handle laboratory or field data appropriately. They will develop the ability to produce technical drawings and architectural designs using manual and digital methods, alongside clear technical reports and presentations. The course also supports independent working, effective teamwork and project management, while developing an understanding of professional responsibilities within architectural engineering. Students will be prepared to investigate a defined research topic, evaluate relevant information and communicate findings in a structured technical format.
