Course Description

Overview

This programme at the University of Southampton is built around the technologies driving one of today's fastest-moving fields: artificial intelligence and machine learning. Students learn to design and build the systems and services shaping this space, working with modern lab facilities and research-led teaching throughout. The course blends mathematical foundations with hands-on engineering, preparing graduates for the growing demand for skilled AI professionals.

What You'll Learn

  • Foundational mathematics and programming for AI and computer engineering, alongside algorithms, data structures, and their analysis

  • Data analytics and the ethical, legal, and security considerations of computing systems

  • Core AI and machine learning concepts, including how intelligent systems represent knowledge and make decisions

  • Scientific computing and signal processing, explored through an interdisciplinary group project

  • Advanced specialist topics such as computer vision, natural language processing, computational biology, and causal reasoning

  • An individual research project applying learning to a self-directed technical challenge

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to design, build, and evaluate intelligent systems using high- and low-level programming, mathematical modelling, and data-driven techniques. They will understand the ethical, legal, and security implications of AI technologies and be able to factor these into technical decision-making. Through collaborative and individual project work, students will also develop strong skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and communicating complex technical ideas, along with the confidence to plan and deliver substantial engineering work independently.
