Overview
Civil engineers shape the physical world around us, designing bridges, roads and buildings that must also stand up to the pressures of a changing climate. The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering at the University of Birmingham combines theoretical study with hands-on design projects, giving students the practical skills to solve real environmental and social challenges. The course is taught in the university's state-of-the-art School of Engineering building, featuring a Design Centre, Makerspace and Collaborative Teaching Laboratory, and is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, supporting progression toward Incorporated and Chartered Engineer status. Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core engineering principles across structures, geotechnics, materials and fluid mechanics to design safe, resilient infrastructure. They will be equipped to use advanced mathematical and computational techniques to model and solve complex engineering problems. Through interdisciplinary design projects and an industrial research project, students will develop strong practical, collaborative and critical thinking skills, working alongside engineers from other disciplines. Graduates will leave with a JBM-accredited, industry-relevant civil engineering education, well prepared for a career addressing infrastructure, construction, energy and climate resilience challenges across the sector.
