Overview
Mechanical engineers keep the world moving, designing and building everything from nanoscale robots to spacecraft, with a growing responsibility to shape a more sustainable future. The BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham builds a strong foundation in mechanics, thermodynamics and design before allowing students to specialise, with the opportunity to attend industry lectures from companies such as Rolls-Royce and Jaguar Land Rover. Teaching takes place in the university's state-of-the-art School of Engineering building, with access to Design Centres, a Makerspace and student teams such as UBRacing and UBRobotics. The course suits students with a strong interest in mathematics and physics who want a practically grounded, IMechE-accredited route into mechanical engineering, working alongside students from other engineering disciplines.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core mechanical engineering principles across mechanics, thermodynamics and design to solve real engineering problems. They will be equipped to use computational tools such as finite element analysis to model and evaluate complex mechanical systems. Through a major group design project and an individual final-year project, students will develop strong practical, collaborative and problem-solving skills, informed by direct engagement with industry. Graduates will leave with an IMechE-accredited, industry-relevant mechanical engineering education, well prepared for a wide-ranging career spanning automotive, aerospace, energy and manufacturing sectors.
