Course Description

Overview

Robots and intelligent machines are transforming industries from manufacturing to healthcare, and building them requires genuine fluency across mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. The BEng (Hons) Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering at the University of Birmingham combines these disciplines to design and deploy intelligent technologies, with teaching shaped directly by industry and research leaders in the field. Students work in the state-of-the-art Collaborative Teaching Laboratory and Makerspace, tackling Integrated Design Projects alongside civil and mechanical engineering students before specialising in robotics and control systems. The course suits students who want a genuinely interdisciplinary engineering education, with strong IET accreditation supporting progression toward Chartered Engineer status.

What You'll Learn

  • Shared engineering fundamentals across civil, mechanical and electrical disciplines in the first year

  • Electronic circuits, devices, electromagnetics and digital electronics

  • Mechanics and the mechanical design of robotic systems

  • Microprocessors and control systems for mechatronic platforms

  • The design, configuration and control of robotic platforms for real-world tasks

  • Specialist final-year options such as telerobotics, telepresence and augmented reality, or the Internet of Things

  • Collaborative, interdisciplinary design work through Integrated Design Projects

  • An Individual Research Project addressing a substantial engineering problem unique to you

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core principles across mechanical, electronic and computer engineering to design and control intelligent robotic systems. They will be equipped to use specialist knowledge of microprocessors, control systems and mechatronic design to solve real engineering problems. Through Integrated Design Projects and an Individual Research Project, students will develop strong practical, collaborative and problem-solving skills, working alongside engineers from other disciplines. Graduates will leave with an IET-accredited, industry-relevant education in mechatronic and robotic engineering, well prepared for a wide-ranging career spanning transport, manufacturing, space technologies and healthcare.
