Course Description

Overview

Designing high-performance flight vehicles, mastering aerodynamic flow fields, and engineering complex space systems are essential to advancing modern aerospace technology and space exploration. The BEng (Hons) Aeronautics and Astronautics at University of Southampton provides a rigorous, accredited engineering education that integrates core mechanical principles with specialized aerospace application. Delivered by world-leading researchers in aeronautical and astronautical disciplines, the curriculum progresses from fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, and flight mechanics to advanced spacecraft engineering and propulsion systems. Students train using state-of-the-art facilities, including extensive wind tunnel complexes, flight simulators, structural testing laboratories, and dedicated design suites. The program balances theoretical analytical training with practical engineering design projects, offering opportunities to collaborate on multidisciplinary group design challenges. This degree is ideally suited for mathematically adept, analytical individuals who wish to master flight mechanics, optimize vehicle performance, and launch high-impact engineering careers across the aviation, defense, space systems, and aerospace technology sectors.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental engineering mathematics, calculus, linear algebra, vector fields, and computational modeling techniques

  • Core principles of fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, boundary layer theory, and high-speed compressible flows

  • Thermodynamics, heat transfer mechanisms, energy conservation laws, and aerospace propulsion systems

  • Solid mechanics, structural analysis, finite element analysis, and advanced aerospace materials behavior

  • Flight dynamics, vehicle stability, control system theory, and aircraft performance evaluation

  • Astronautics fundamentals, orbital mechanics, space environment dynamics, and spacecraft systems engineering

  • Engineering design methodologies, CAD modeling, systems integration, and collaborative group design projects

  • Avionics principles, electronic systems, sensor instrumentation, and aerospace data analysis techniques

  • Major final-year individual capstone research or engineering design project addressing an advanced aerospace challenge

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of fluid dynamics, orbital mechanics, structural behavior, and propulsion physics governing atmospheric and space flight vehicles. They will demonstrate the capability to analyze complex aerodynamic phenomena, design aerospace structural components, simulate orbital trajectories, and evaluate control system stability for diverse aircraft and spacecraft designs. Students acquire strong practical competencies in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element modeling, experimental wind tunnel testing, and computer-aided design through hands-on laboratory sessions and collaborative engineering challenges. Furthermore, scholars master the ability to communicate technical engineering specifications clearly, manage multidisciplinary design projects, and evaluate the environmental, economic, and safety impacts of aerospace technology. Through research-informed instruction and accredited engineering training, graduates cultivate the analytical precision, technical agility, and creative problem-solving skills required to excel as aeronautical engineers, space systems analysts, propulsion specialists, aerodynamicists, or postgraduate research scholars.
