Course Description

Overview

Nursing demands both scientific knowledge and genuine compassion, and today’s health services need nurses who can lead as well as care. The BN (Hons) Nursing at the University of Liverpool is an adult nursing programme that combines academic study with extensive clinical practice, preparing students to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care in complex health and social care settings. Students are supported to become confident, critical and evidence-informed practitioners who can evaluate and improve clinical practice while providing high-quality, person-centred care. Placements begin in the first year with a four-week acute placement, followed by further placements across a range of practice environments. Skills are first practised in specialist facilities such as the Florence Nightingale Simulation Suites, and students also learn alongside peers from other healthcare disciplines. Teaching combines interactive lectures, seminars, tutorials, role-play and guided independent study. The final year brings extended placements and a dissertation on an area of nursing practice of the student’s choosing. The course suits students who want a practical, leadership-focused route into nursing and who are ready for the responsibilities of professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to assess needs, plan, deliver and evaluate safe, compassionate, person-centred care for people with a wide range of physical and mental health needs, including acute, long-term and complex conditions. They will be equipped to support families and carers, work within multidisciplinary teams, and practise in a professional, ethical and legally accountable way. Study of research methods and a final-year dissertation will build the ability to critically evaluate evidence and apply it to improve patient care. Simulation, interprofessional learning and progressively extended placements will develop clinical judgement, leadership and decision-making.
