Course Description

Overview

This programme at the University of Leeds combines mathematics, statistics, finance, and economics to develop the skills needed to assess and quantify the impact of future events. Delivered jointly by the School of Mathematics and Leeds University Business School, it provides a multidisciplinary foundation in actuarial science alongside programming, data analysis, and financial modelling.

What You'll Learn

  • Foundational mathematical concepts, including calculus, functions, and mathematical proof

  • Probability, statistics, and the mathematics of financial and insurance markets

  • Financial mathematics, statistical methods, and business finance

  • The theory of interest rates and the time value of money, applied to loans, mortgages, bonds, and insurance

  • Life insurance theory, including policy payments subject to mortality probabilities

  • Stochastic processes, survival and risk theory, and their underlying mathematical foundations

  • Financial modelling and further actuarial mathematics in the final year

  • Optional modules spanning mathematics, statistics, finance, and economics tailored to individual interests

  • Content aligned with professional actuarial examination syllabuses

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to formulate and investigate mathematical questions relevant to actuarial practice and build models representing real-world financial and insurance scenarios. They will be able to apply a wide range of statistical and mathematical techniques to solve practical problems, and communicate results, along with their inherent uncertainty, to both expert and non-expert audiences. Students will also be able to critically evaluate mathematical and statistical arguments, and apply core actuarial and financial concepts across a range of professional and analytical contexts.
