Course Description

Overview

This foundation-level programme is designed for students aiming to progress into a mathematically rigorous undergraduate degree in actuarial science. Delivered by Queen Mary University's academic staff, it builds the quantitative reasoning, statistical literacy, and economic understanding needed to succeed in a demanding numerate discipline. The course bridges the gap between secondary education and the analytical demands of university-level actuarial study.

What You'll Learn

  • Core mathematical techniques applied to economic and financial contexts

  • Statistical methods and their use in analysing data and modelling uncertainty

  • Fundamentals of microeconomics, including individual and market-level decision-making

  • Principles of macroeconomics, covering broader economic systems and policy

  • Academic English and study skills tailored to quantitative disciplines

  • An independent research project to develop self-directed analytical work

  • Optional modules in related humanities or social science subjects to broaden academic perspective

Learning Outcomes

On completing this programme, students will be able to apply mathematical and statistical methods to solve structured problems and interpret quantitative data with confidence. They will have developed a working understanding of economic theory, from individual market behaviour to wider policy considerations, alongside strengthened research and academic writing abilities. These combined skills will leave graduates well prepared to enter the first year of a BSc in Actuarial Science, equipped with the numerical foundation and study discipline the degree requires.
