Course Description

Overview

BSc Chemistry at King’s College London develops a broad understanding of chemistry through both theoretical study and experimental work. The course connects core chemical principles with contemporary scientific research, helping students understand how chemistry contributes to areas such as biotechnology, chemical biology and biomedical research.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental principles across physical, organic and inorganic chemistry.

  • Experimental chemistry and practical laboratory techniques.

  • Contemporary approaches and emerging areas within chemical science.

  • Connections between chemistry and interdisciplinary fields such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, chemical biology and biomedical research.

  • Scientific concepts and methods informed by current research within the discipline.

  • Skills for communicating chemical ideas clearly and working flexibly across different areas of chemistry.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key concepts across major areas of chemistry and apply them to problems encountered in modern chemical science. They will develop practical experience in using experimental approaches to investigate chemical questions and interpret scientific observations. Students will also be able to connect theoretical knowledge with laboratory practice and recognise how different branches of chemistry interact rather than treating them as isolated subjects. The course further supports the ability to communicate scientific ideas effectively and approach unfamiliar problems with flexibility. Through exposure to research-informed areas of chemistry, students will gain an understanding of how chemical knowledge is developed and applied in contemporary scientific contexts.
