Course Description

Overview

This foundation-level programme is designed for students progressing into an undergraduate degree that combines core computing principles with the study of artificial intelligence. Delivered by Queen Mary University's academic staff, it builds the mathematical, scientific, and technical grounding required for advanced work in computer science. The course prepares learners for a discipline that blends logical problem-solving with the theoretical and practical foundations of intelligent systems.

What You'll Learn

  • Mathematical foundations, including further mathematics, that support computational and algorithmic thinking

  • Core principles of physical science relevant to engineering and computing contexts

  • Foundations of chemical science as part of a broad scientific grounding

  • Introductory engineering concepts that connect theory with applied problem-solving

  • Scientific and technical communication skills for articulating complex ideas clearly

  • Study strategies geared toward success in a highly quantitative, fast-evolving field

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this programme, students will be able to apply mathematical and logical reasoning to structured problems, a core skill for computer science and artificial intelligence study. They will have developed a working understanding of scientific and engineering principles that underpin computational systems, along with the ability to communicate technical concepts with clarity and precision. These outcomes will prepare graduates to enter the first year of a BSc in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence with the analytical foundation and academic discipline the degree requires.
