Overview
This Foundation Year introduces international students to the science behind food production, safety, and sustainability, preparing them for entry onto the full BSc Food Science degree at the University of Reading. It blends core scientific study with academic skills training, giving students without standard UK qualifications a pathway into undergraduate food science education. The year is structured to build both subject knowledge and the study habits needed for degree-level work.
What You'll Learn
Fundamentals of animal and cell biology relevant to science-based degrees
Chemical principles, including molecular structure and reaction behaviour
Laboratory techniques and safe working practices in a science setting
Academic writing, oral communication, and research literacy skills
Reflective and critical engagement with subject-related research
Practical and analytical skills that underpin further study in food science
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the foundation year, students will be able to explain core biological and chemical concepts relevant to food-related science degrees. They will have practical laboratory experience, including safe handling of equipment and materials, and the ability to apply scientific reasoning to experimental work. Students will also be equipped with strong academic communication skills, allowing them to write clearly, present findings, and engage critically with research literature. Together, these outcomes prepare students for the transition into the first year of the BSc Food Science programme, where this foundation in science and study skills will support their continued academic progress.
