Course Description

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Biochemistry course provides a foundation for understanding the chemical processes that underpin living organisms. Students explore how biological molecules function, interact, and contribute to cellular processes, developing the scientific knowledge and practical understanding needed for further study in biochemistry and related areas.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental principles of biochemistry and the chemistry of biological systems

  • Structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids

  • Molecular processes that support cellular activity and biological function

  • Core concepts in molecular and cellular biology

  • Biochemical reactions, pathways, and the factors that influence them

  • Scientific methods, laboratory techniques, and the interpretation of experimental findings

  • Approaches to analysing and evaluating biochemical information and evidence

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key biochemical principles and relate molecular structure to biological function. They will understand how biochemical processes operate within cells and how different biological molecules contribute to these processes. Students will also be able to apply appropriate scientific approaches when investigating biochemical questions, work with experimental information, and interpret results using relevant concepts. The course will develop their ability to assess scientific evidence critically and communicate biochemical ideas clearly. Students will gain a coherent understanding of the relationship between chemistry and biology, providing a foundation for applying biochemical knowledge to further academic study and related scientific contexts.
