Course Description

Overview:

The BSc(Hons) Biochemistry course examines the molecular and chemical foundations of life, bringing together concepts from biology and chemistry to understand how living systems function. Students gain a strong scientific base while exploring the processes that connect molecular activity with biological and health-related phenomena.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental principles of biochemistry and the chemistry of biological molecules.

  • How molecular components interact and contribute to cellular and biological functions.

  • Key concepts in biological science and chemistry that underpin biochemical study.

  • The connection between biochemical processes and wider areas of science and health.

  • Themes related to genetics, pharmacology, neuroscience, and other molecular disciplines.

  • Scientific methods and approaches for examining questions about biological systems.

  • The importance of biochemical knowledge in understanding life processes and health.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course, students will be able to describe important biochemical principles and explain their relevance to living systems. They will understand how chemical processes operate within biological environments and how molecular interactions influence cellular activity and function. Students will also be able to relate biochemical concepts to broader scientific fields, including genetics, pharmacology, neuroscience, and biological science. Through this foundation, they will develop a clearer understanding of how biochemistry contributes to the investigation of biological and health-related questions and provides a basis for further study across a range of scientific disciplines.
