Course Description

Overview:

Biological Sciences BSc (Hons) provides a broad introduction to the study of living organisms and the biological processes that shape life. The course develops a foundation in core biological concepts while encouraging scientific thinking, practical investigation and the interpretation of biological evidence.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental principles of biology, including the organisation and function of living systems.

  • Cell biology and the molecular processes that underpin life.

  • Genetics, inheritance and the role of genetic information in biological systems.

  • Evolution and the mechanisms that contribute to biological diversity.

  • Ecology and the relationships between organisms and their environments.

  • Biological structure and function across different levels of organisation.

  • Scientific approaches to investigating biological questions, including observation, experimentation and evidence-based analysis.

  • Practical approaches to handling, interpreting and communicating biological information.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key concepts and processes across the biological sciences and relate them to the organisation and functioning of living systems. They will be able to apply appropriate scientific principles when examining biological questions, interpret evidence and use logical reasoning to develop supported conclusions. Students will also understand how biological systems can be studied at different scales, from molecular and cellular processes through to organisms and ecological relationships. The course will enable students to evaluate biological information critically, recognise connections between different areas of biology, and communicate scientific ideas clearly using appropriate terminology and evidence and Engineering leads to a wide range of undergraduate engineering and science degrees at the University.
