Overview
The BSc (Hons) Biology at the University of Bristol explores living systems from molecular and cellular processes to organisms, populations, and ecosystems. The foundation stage establishes core scientific knowledge and practical skills, providing a broad basis for studying biological processes and the diversity of life.
What You'll Learn
Cell biology, including cellular structure, function, communication, and division.
Molecular biology and the biological processes operating at a molecular level.
Genetics, inheritance, variation, and the mechanisms underlying biological diversity.
Evolution and the processes that shape organisms and populations over time.
Physiology, development, and the functioning of living organisms.
Ecology and relationships between organisms and their environments.
Biodiversity, classification, and patterns of biological variation.
Laboratory techniques, experimental design, observation, and biological data analysis.
Research methods, scientific communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem solving.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to explain key biological principles across molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecological levels. They will understand how biological processes interact to shape the structure, function, diversity, and evolution of living organisms. Students will develop the ability to design or conduct biological investigations, collect and analyze data, and evaluate experimental evidence using appropriate scientific methods. They will also be able to interpret research findings, assess competing explanations, and apply biological knowledge to unfamiliar questions. Through theoretical and practical study, students will strengthen their laboratory, analytical, research, and communication skills while developing an integrated understanding of life and the processes that influence organisms and their environments.
