Course Description

Overview

Understanding life at every scale, from individual genes to entire ecosystems, has never mattered more, as biologists work to address challenges such as climate change, food security and biodiversity loss. The BSc (Hons) Biology at the University of Bristol offers a broad introduction to the full spectrum of biological sciences, covering the diversity, evolution and function of living organisms and how they interact, compete and cooperate. The course draws on research spanning animal behaviour, ecology, plant sciences and evolutionary biology, and is taught in the university's dedicated Life Sciences Building alongside leading researchers in the field. It suits students who want a flexible, broadly grounded biology degree, with the option to specialise deeply or maintain breadth as their interests develop.

What You'll Learn

  • The diversity, evolution and function of living organisms, from genes to ecosystems

  • How animals, plants and microbes interact, compete and cooperate

  • Animal behaviour and sensory biology

  • Ecology and environmental change

  • Plant and agricultural sciences

  • Evolutionary biology

  • A broad foundation across the life sciences in the first year, with growing flexibility to specialise or maintain breadth thereafter

  • Practical experience through a field- or laboratory-based course and an independent research project

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the diversity, evolution and function of living organisms across multiple biological scales, from molecular processes to whole ecosystems. They will be equipped to analyse how organisms interact within their environments, drawing on current research in areas such as ecology, evolutionary biology and animal behaviour. Through a field or laboratory course and an independent research project, students will develop practical skills in experimental design, data collection and scientific interpretation. Graduates will leave with a broad, flexible grounding in biological sciences, along with the research and analytical skills needed for further study or a wide range of careers connected to the life sciences.
