The Chemistry BSc at King's College London provides a comprehensive chemical education that balances theoretical principles with extensive practical laboratory experience. Delivered within the Department of Chemistry, the curriculum covers core domains including organic, inorganic, physical, and computational chemistry, alongside specialized research-informed modules. Students gain hands-on expertise in state-of-the-art synthetic and analytical laboratories equipped with modern spectroscopic instrumentation and computational suites. The degree places a strong emphasis on quantitative problem-solving, real-world applications, and interdisciplinary scientific connections, with pathways available for industrial placement or study abroad options. This course is ideally suited for analytical, scientifically curious individuals who wish to explore molecular mechanisms, develop novel chemical compounds, and pursue diverse careers across science, industry, and technology.

What You'll Learn

  • Principles of organic synthesis, functional group transformations, mechanism evaluation, and stereochemistry

  • Inorganic chemistry foundations, transition metal complexes, main group element reactivity, and organometallic chemistry

  • Physical chemistry concepts, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, quantum mechanics, and molecular spectroscopy

  • Quantitative laboratory techniques, chemical synthesis protocols, and laboratory safety standards

  • Modern analytical techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and chromatographic separation

  • Mathematical frameworks for chemistry, physical modeling, computational chemistry methods, and data analysis

  • Contemporary chemical applications, sustainable technology solutions, green chemistry principles, and material design

  • Research methodology, scientific reporting, literature critique, and collaborative project management

  • Independent final-year research project investigating a specialized topic in experimental or computational chemistry

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will possess an in-depth understanding of theoretical and practical chemical concepts, molecular reactivity, and physical principles. They will demonstrate the capability to design, execute, and analyze complex laboratory experiments safely using modern analytical instrumentation and computational software. Students build strong practical capabilities in chemical synthesis, data interpretation, spectroscopic analysis, and mathematical problem-solving through hands-on laboratory workshops and collaborative assignments. Furthermore, scholars master the ability to evaluate scientific literature critically, address safety and environmental regulations, and present complex technical findings clearly to scientific colleagues and interdisciplinary teams. Through research-informed study and individual capstone research, graduates cultivate the intellectual agility, precision, and practical expertise required to excel as research chemists, analytical specialists, pharmaceutical developers, intellectual property advisors, or postgraduate research scientists.
