Overview

Chemistry sits behind many of the solutions to the world's biggest problems, from tackling climate change to discovering new medicines, making it a subject with genuine real-world impact. The BSc (Hons) Chemistry at the University of Bristol builds a strong foundation in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, while introducing applications across analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry. Students develop key mathematical and experimental skills through hands-on work with industry-standard equipment, alongside embedded careers support covering CVs, professional profiles and interview preparation. The course suits students who want a scientifically rigorous, professionally accredited degree that opens doors to a genuinely wide range of career paths.

What You'll Learn

  • Fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry

  • Applications in analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry

  • Mathematical skills specific to chemical analysis

  • Experimental design and interpretation of results

  • Hands-on laboratory work using industry-standard equipment

  • A shared foundation across all chemistry degrees in the first two years, with growing choice of units by interest

  • A specialised final-year project, from laboratory research to science communication or education-focused work

  • Careers skills including CV preparation, professional online presence and interview practice

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core concepts across inorganic, organic and physical chemistry to explain and predict chemical behaviour. They will be equipped to design experiments, interpret results and apply mathematical and analytical reasoning to real chemical problems, using industry-standard laboratory equipment and techniques. Through a specialised final-year project, students will develop the ability to conduct independent research and communicate scientific findings clearly.
