Course Description

Overview

Computing now sits behind nearly every industry, and a genuinely broad computer science education needs to combine strong programming fundamentals with exposure to emerging fields such as AI and data science. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire builds this foundation across programming, systems, databases and networks, before final-year study in areas including computer security, concurrency and user experience. Based in Spectra, the university's new home for physics, engineering and computer science, the course is accredited by BCS and offers strong links to major technology employers alongside optional work placements or study abroad. It suits students who want a well-rounded computer science education with the flexibility to specialise in AI, cyber security or software engineering after the first year.

What You'll Learn

  • Programming, discrete structures and the mathematical foundations of computer science

  • Computer design, networks, operating systems and connected devices

  • Databases, algorithms and data structures

  • The social, professional, ethical and legal aspects of computing

  • Software architecture and large-scale software development

  • Internet of Things systems, real-time control and embedded system design

  • Computer security, concurrency and user experience in the final year

  • An individual final-year project addressing a real computer science challenge

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core computer science principles across programming, systems design and databases to build effective software solutions. They will be equipped to consider the ethical, legal and professional dimensions of computing, and to apply this awareness to real technical decision-making. Through team-based projects and an individual final-year project, students will develop strong problem-solving, collaboration and research skills. Graduates will leave with a broad, BCS-accredited grounding in computer science and the flexibility to specialise, well prepared for a wide range of careers spanning software development, data science, cyber security and artificial intelligence.
