Course Description

Overview

Computing now touches nearly every part of modern life, and mastering it requires depth across theory, systems and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science at the University of Bristol covers areas including high-performance computing, cryptography, algorithms and human factors, taught by experts actively shaping the future of the field. The course is shaped by industry input throughout, with opportunities to work alongside industrial mentors, contribute to genuine research, and gain access to dedicated computing labs and a hands-on Maker Space for digital fabrication and product design. It suits students who want a technically strong, industry-relevant computer science education combined with real project work and the chance to specialise in their own area of interest.

What You'll Learn

  • Core principles of algorithms and a range of programming paradigms

  • The mathematics and statistics underpinning modern computer science

  • How modern computer architecture is organised

  • Concurrent and networked computing

  • Human-computer interaction and software development tools

  • Theoretical and data-driven approaches within computer science

  • A team-based software development project addressing a real business or organisational need in the second year

  • An individual final-year project, co-created with a supervisor, developing specialist expertise in a chosen area

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core computer science principles, including algorithms, programming paradigms and system architecture, to design and build effective software solutions. They will be equipped to use their understanding of mathematics, networked systems and human-computer interaction to address real technical and organisational challenges. Through a team-based software development project and an individually supervised final-year project, students will develop practical, collaborative and research skills that mirror professional practice. Graduates will leave with a strong, industry-relevant grounding in computer science, along with the technical expertise and problem-solving ability needed for further study or a career shaping future technology.
