Course Description

Overview

Artificial intelligence is one of the most important and fast-moving areas of computer science, transforming industries from technology, robotics and finance to healthcare and the creative and third sectors. The BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) at the University of Liverpool teaches the key facts, principles and concepts of computer science, then develops specialist expertise in AI theories, methods and applications. The course is shaped by the university’s research in data science, machine learning, robotics and AI, so students engage directly with the challenges of modern artificial intelligence. The first year builds a grounding in programming, computer systems, data structures, algorithms and the basics of artificial intelligence. In the second and third years, students extend their knowledge of software and database development and choose from specialist topics. Teaching comes from a School of Computer Science and Informatics with a history stretching back to the 1960s, where 100% of research outputs were rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the latest national assessment. The degree is accredited by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and students can add a year in industry or a year abroad. It suits students who want strong computing foundations together with a focused route into artificial intelligence.

What You’ll Learn

  • Programming, object-oriented programming and the paradigms behind different programming languages

  • Data structures and algorithms, including how to analyse the complexity of algorithms

  • How different computer systems work

  • Introductory artificial intelligence and the foundations of computer science

  • Building and structuring databases and the fundamentals of software engineering

  • Theory of computation

  • Data science and data mining

  • Biocomputation and its uses and possibilities

  • Computer vision, multi-agent systems, and robot perception and manipulation

  • An individual computer science project exploring a substantial problem in depth

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply core computer science principles across programming, algorithms, computer systems and databases to build effective software. They will be equipped to work with the theories, methods and applications of artificial intelligence, drawing on specialist study in areas such as data science, computer vision, multi-agent systems and robotics. Teaching that combines lectures, small-group tutorials and supervised laboratory sessions, alongside individual and group projects, will develop problem-solving, teamwork and presentation skills. Optional specialist modules in the later years let students shape their expertise around their own interests within AI. Graduates will leave with a BCS-accredited, technically grounded skill set, well prepared for careers in artificial intelligence, software development, data science and technical consultancy.
