Course Description

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Data Science at Keele University combines mathematics, statistics, programming and computing to explore how complex datasets can be analysed and transformed into meaningful insights. The course also examines artificial intelligence, machine learning and data visualisation, developing the technical and analytical understanding needed to investigate data-driven problems.

What You'll Learn

  • Mathematical foundations, including probability, statistics, vectors, matrices and logical reasoning.

  • Programming and computational problem-solving using languages such as Python and Java.

  • Statistical methods for exploring, summarising and modelling data.

  • Data analysis, interpretation and visualisation techniques.

  • Databases, web technologies and methods for managing data.

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning, including neural networks and deep learning.

  • Cloud computing, distributed systems and technologies for handling large datasets.

  • Data ethics, security, fairness and responsible approaches to AI and data analysis.

  • Independent research, technical development and professional communication.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to use mathematical, statistical and programming techniques to investigate complex datasets and solve data-focused problems. They will understand how machine learning and artificial intelligence can support data analysis and be able to evaluate appropriate computational approaches. Students will develop the ability to prepare, analyse and interpret data, communicate findings through effective visualisation and assess the reliability and limitations of their conclusions. They will also gain an understanding of ethical, security and governance considerations associated with data and AI. The course develops systematic problem-solving, independent research and technical communication skills for analysing and presenting data-driven insights.
