Overview
The BSc (Hons) Data Science at the University of Bristol combines mathematics, statistics, computing, and programming to explore how data can be collected, processed, analysed, and interpreted. The foundation stage develops core scientific and mathematical knowledge, preparing students for more advanced study of computational methods and data-driven problem solving.
What You'll Learn
Mathematics and statistics for analysing quantitative information and solving data-related problems.
Programming and computational thinking, including approaches to developing and testing code.
Data structures, algorithms, and methods for organising and processing information.
Database concepts and techniques for managing and retrieving data.
Statistical modelling, probability, and methods for identifying patterns in data.
Machine learning and computational approaches to developing predictive models.
Data analysis, visualisation, interpretation, and presentation of results.
Research methods, experimental approaches, and evaluation of evidence.
Communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and structured problem-solving skills.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical, statistical, and computational methods to investigate data-driven problems. They will understand how data can be gathered, organised, processed, analysed, and communicated and how programming and statistical techniques can be combined to extract useful insights. Students will develop the ability to select appropriate analytical methods, interpret results critically, and evaluate the assumptions and limitations of different approaches. They will also be able to design and implement computational solutions, work with data using suitable tools, and present findings clearly to different audiences. Through theoretical and practical study, students will strengthen their analytical, research, programming, communication, and problem-solving skills while developing an integrated understanding of data science.
