Course Description

Overview

Economics provides the analytical framework necessary to understand individual choices, market dynamics, and global financial systems. The BSc (Hons) Economics at University of Surrey delivers a comprehensive education in quantitative techniques, microeconomic theory, and macroeconomic policy. Taught by research-active economists, the programme gives students access to specialized data labs and industry-standard statistical software to analyze real-world financial and social phenomena. The curriculum balances mathematical modeling with empirical data analysis, taking learners from foundational economic principles to advanced studies in econometrics, behavioral economics, and financial markets. Students engage in practical data manipulation and research projects, evaluating the impacts of fiscal policy, trade dynamics, and market regulation. This course suits logically minded problem-solvers with strong quantitative skills who want to address complex socioeconomic challenges. Graduates emerge with the mathematical precision, data literacy, and strategic insights required to thrive in finance, policy analysis, and corporate consulting.

What You'll Learn

• Microeconomic theory, consumer behavior, and market equilibrium mechanics

• Macroeconomic frameworks, monetary policy, and international trade dynamics

• Mathematical methods, linear algebra, and calculus for economic modeling

• Econometric techniques, statistical testing, and empirical data analysis

• Financial economics, asset pricing, and corporate financial decision-making

• Behavioral economics, game theory, and strategic decision frameworks

• Applied economic policy evaluation, labor markets, and environmental economics

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the programme, students will be capable of constructing and testing quantitative models to evaluate economic behavior and policy impacts across microeconomic and macroeconomic levels. Graduates will demonstrate high-level technical expertise using statistical software to analyze large datasets, draw empirical inferences, and test economic hypotheses. Through independent research and project work, students gain the practical skills needed to assess market failures, evaluate regulatory policies, and formulate evidence-based economic strategies. They will critically appraise current global economic issues—such as inflation, inequality, and environmental sustainability—while communicating complex mathematical arguments clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders. Ultimately, graduates acquire the analytical rigor, data-driven reasoning, and professional independence required to excel in economic research, financial institutions, and policy-making organizations.
