Course Description

Overview

This programme at the University of Southampton pairs scientific theory with hands-on project work to tackle the environmental challenges facing society. Students investigate how ecosystems, pollution, climate and human activity interact, and can shape their studies around a specialist pathway such as sustainability, biodiversity and conservation, or water and the environment. The result is a science-led grounding in how the planet's systems work and how they can be protected.

What You'll Learn

  • Core principles of ecology, conservation, and Earth systems, alongside quantitative research methods and fieldwork techniques

  • Geomorphological processes shaping landscapes, and the risks posed by environmental and socio-economic hazards

  • Environmental pollution and its causes, from industrial activity to urbanisation and agriculture

  • Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for analysing spatial and environmental data

  • Pathway-specific themes such as biodiversity loss, corporate environmental responsibility, freshwater ecosystems, or global climate change

  • An independent research project developed with academic supervision, addressing a real environmental question of the student's choosing

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to analyse environmental problems through a scientific lens, drawing on ecological, geological, and social data to understand how natural and human systems interact. They will be equipped to design and carry out independent research, apply GIS and other analytical tools to real-world environmental questions, and communicate findings clearly to varied audiences. The course also builds practical fieldwork competence and the critical thinking needed to propose evidence-based solutions to sustainability and conservation challenges.
