Overview
Geography is the integrated study of landscapes, people, places and environments, and it is vital for understanding a planet that is changing rapidly. Studying BSc (Hons) Geography at Loughborough University allows students to explore the links between human and physical geography, a discipline that bridges the social and natural sciences. The first year builds a broad foundation in both strands, after which students can specialise increasingly in physical geography or keep a balance between the two. Academic staff are advancing research in physical and human geography and helping to shape national and international policy, so the knowledge students gain reflects current scientific thinking on major societal issues. The degree is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), and the department is accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project as a bronze-level Carbon Literate Educator. Fieldwork and laboratory practice feature throughout, and a placement year or study abroad year can be added for extra experience. The course suits those curious about environmental processes and the pressures acting on them, and graduates gain scientific, analytical and professional skills for a wide range of careers.

Fieldwork and laboratory techniques
An independent geography dissertation
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will understand how physical and human processes combine to shape the world, from local environmental change to global patterns that unfold over timescales ranging from seasonal to geological. They will be able to explain the behaviour of Earth systems, landscapes and environmental hazards, and to evaluate critically how natural and human-made pressures alter them. Practical training develops competence in gathering, analysing and presenting data through quantitative methods, GIS and digital mapping, as well as through hands-on fieldwork and laboratory techniques. Students will learn to apply this knowledge to real environmental and societal problems rather than treating it as theory alone, and to communicate their findings clearly through reports and presentations. The independent dissertation demonstrates the ability to design and carry out original research. Flexible module choices allow students to concentrate on physical geography or maintain a balance with human geography, and placement or study abroad options help them build the experience needed for careers in sectors such as environmental management, planning, consultancy and education.
