Overview
The BSc (Hons) Geology at the University of Bristol examines the Earth, its materials, structure, history, and the processes that have shaped the planet. The foundation stage develops core scientific and mathematical knowledge, preparing students to investigate geological systems through theoretical study, practical analysis, and field-based approaches.
What You'll Learn
Earth materials, including minerals, rocks, and their formation.
Earth structure and the physical processes operating within the planet.
Plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism, and related geological processes.
Sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks and the geological cycles connecting them.
Earth history and methods for reconstructing past environments and events.
Fossils, palaeontology, and evidence for changes in life through geological time.
Geological mapping, field observation, sampling, and interpretation.
Geochemistry, geophysics, and analytical approaches for investigating Earth systems.
Scientific research, data analysis, communication, teamwork, and problem solving.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to explain the major materials, structures, and processes that make up and shape the Earth. They will understand how geological evidence can be used to reconstruct the planet's history and interpret changes in environments, landscapes, and life over geological time. Students will develop practical skills in observing, identifying, recording, and analysing geological materials and will be able to apply appropriate scientific methods to geological questions. They will also learn to interpret quantitative and qualitative data, evaluate competing explanations, and construct evidence-based conclusions. Through theoretical, practical, and field-oriented study, students will strengthen their scientific reasoning, analytical, research, and communication skills while developing an integrated understanding of Earth systems.
