Course Description

Overview:

The BSc (Hons) Marine and Freshwater Biology focuses on the organisms, ecosystems, and environmental processes that shape aquatic life. The course combines biological knowledge with ecological and conservation perspectives, helping students understand the complexity of marine and freshwater environments and the factors that influence their health and biodiversity.

What You'll Learn:

  • Fundamental concepts in biological science and aquatic biology

  • Marine and freshwater organisms, their diversity, and ecological roles

  • Structure and function of aquatic ecosystems

  • Relationships between organisms and their surrounding environments

  • Principles of ecology, biodiversity, and wildlife conservation

  • Environmental challenges affecting aquatic ecosystems

  • Scientific methods for exploring biological and ecological questions

  • Links between biological science, environmental management, and conservation

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to describe key biological processes and apply them to organisms and ecosystems in marine and freshwater settings. They will be able to explain patterns of aquatic biodiversity and examine how organisms interact with one another and with their environments.

Students will also develop the ability to assess environmental and conservation issues from a biological perspective and use scientific reasoning to consider questions relating to aquatic ecosystems. They will understand how biological knowledge can contribute to the study and protection of wildlife and natural environments, while developing a broad academic foundation relevant to areas such as marine biology, ecology, environmental science, and conservation.
