Overview
The BSc (Hons) Mathematics at the University of Bristol develops a rigorous understanding of mathematical concepts, structures, and methods. The foundation stage builds essential knowledge in mathematics and related subjects, preparing students to progress into more advanced theoretical, applied, and computational areas.
What You'll Learn
Algebra, including equations, functions, sequences, and mathematical structures.
Calculus and its applications to mathematical problems.
Geometry, vectors, and methods for representing mathematical relationships.
Probability and statistics, including approaches to analysing uncertainty and data.
Discrete mathematics, logic, and techniques for solving structured problems.
Mathematical modelling and the use of mathematics to represent real-world systems.
Differential equations and methods for describing changing systems.
Computational approaches and the use of mathematical software where appropriate.
Proof, mathematical reasoning, research, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical concepts and techniques to analyze problems and construct logically sound solutions. They will understand how different areas of mathematics, including algebra, calculus, statistics, probability, and discrete mathematics, connect and can be used in theoretical and applied contexts. Students will develop the ability to formulate mathematical models, manipulate mathematical expressions, interpret results, and assess the assumptions underlying different approaches. They will also be able to use appropriate computational or analytical methods to investigate mathematical questions and communicate their reasoning clearly. Through increasingly rigorous study, students will strengthen their ability to work with abstract concepts, construct and evaluate mathematical arguments, solve unfamiliar problems, and undertake independent mathematical investigation.
