Course Description

Overview

The BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Data Science combines mathematical reasoning with methods for working with data, enabling students to investigate problems through quantitative analysis and computational techniques. The course develops a strong foundation in mathematical concepts while introducing approaches for collecting, analysing, interpreting and communicating insights from data.

What You'll Learn

  • Core mathematical concepts, methods and problem-solving techniques

  • Algebra, calculus and mathematical analysis

  • Probability and statistical principles

  • Computational methods and mathematical modelling

  • Programming techniques for data-focused applications

  • Data management, preparation and analysis

  • Statistical modelling and interpretation

  • Data visualisation and presentation of findings

  • Techniques for identifying patterns and drawing conclusions from datasets

  • Applications of mathematics and data science to practical problems

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply mathematical reasoning and quantitative methods to investigate complex problems. They will understand how probability, statistics, modelling and computational techniques can be combined to analyse data and evaluate evidence. Students will be able to use appropriate programming and analytical methods to work with datasets, identify meaningful patterns and interpret results critically. They will also be able to communicate mathematical and data-driven findings clearly using suitable visual and analytical approaches, while recognising the assumptions and limitations that affect quantitative conclusions.
