Course Description

Overview

Caring for children and young people calls for clinical expertise, patience and an understanding of how families experience illness and recovery. Studying BSc (Hons) Nursing (Children's) at Keele University prepares students to become qualified children's nurses who can support young patients facing a wide range of health challenges. The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and is built around the seven platforms that underpin pre-registration nursing education. Lecturers are expert clinicians and qualified teachers from different specialisms, and their research informs the content of the course. Students develop practical skills in clinical simulation facilities, including two on-campus simulation spaces, the Clinical Education Centre and two simulation families of eight mannequins. They also learn in a broad range of placement settings, which gives them experience of working with many different teams. The course suits people who want to make a positive difference to children, young people and their families, and successful graduates can apply for NMC registration as nurses.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have the knowledge, skills and confidence expected of a registered children's nurse, grounded in the seven NMC platforms. They will understand the theory behind nursing practice and be able to apply it when caring for children and young people with different health needs, while recognising the important role families play in that care. Simulation work allows them to rehearse and refine clinical skills safely before using them with patients, and placements across a wide variety of teams provide practical experience that helps them judge which career pathway suits them best. Learning from clinicians who are also qualified teachers helps students connect theory to practice and appreciate how research shapes the care they provide. Support from the children's nursing teaching team, together with the structure of the course, helps them reflect on their progress and meet professional standards. Graduates will be able to practise safely, accountably and compassionately, to continue developing their expertise across the varied opportunities within children's nursing, and to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
